East Preston Infant School

English

The children at East Preston Infant School engage in a creative and comprehensive approach to literacy. Our school follows Jane Considine’s 'The Write Stuff' scheme, which is an engaging, creative and language-rich programme where children are taught the skills to become confident, independent writers. The units of the scheme are closely matched to our topics and our long-term planning, whilst also covering a wide variety of genres and writing styles. Throughout each topic, pupils progress through the skills necessary for forming each genre whilst also developing vocabulary linked to the topics. The importance of well-formed letters and punctuation are highlighted throughout, alongside additional handwriting lessons.English – Jane Considine writing approach – St Clements Catholic Primary School

The Write Stuff is based on two guiding principles; teaching a sequence of lessons that slide between experience days and sentence stacking lessons. With modelling at the heart of them, the sentence stacking lessons are broken into bite-sized learning chunks and taught under the structural framework of the Writing Rainbow. Teachers prepare children for writing by modelling the ideas, grammar and techniques of writing. Each unit of work follows the plot points of a story, or the ‘shapes’ of a non-fiction text.

At East Preston Infant School, children are taught to read through a DfE validated scheme called 'Monster Phonics'. This scheme provides a systematic progression and aligned reading scheme. This DfE Validated Phonics Scheme And Ofsted-Readymultisensory approach uses colourful characters, songs and animations to engage children. Colour-coded books and activities help children to make the link between spellings and sounds whilst promoting fluency and a love of reading.

It is the aim of every teacher in East Preston Infant School to ensure that their class enjoys reading, writing and responding to texts, whilst raising standards for every pupil.
